why should you NOT reposition the authors’ names and put them in alphabetical order for reference page?
this is for an APA paper for psychology and just want to know why you can’t do that.

Hi,
I used to wonder this.
It’s to make it easier for people to look up the books you’re referencing.
Basically, if you use a book by “Xavi, Smith and Brookes” but you reposition the authors names in your reference page so it’s by “Brookes, Smith and Xavi”, I’ll read your APA paper and then go to the wrong section of the library for the book you used.

The names are in that order for a reason, the first person listed will usually have done most of the work, or be the most important or have contributed the most money or it was their idea or some random reason.
There needs to be consistency so you or I or someone else can all pick up the same paper, reference it the same and be able to look up and find the same paper.
