What psychotherapy is ? Is it about talking and getting sympathy from a counselor ?

Having somebody to vent feelings, and feel “empathy” for our troubles? Or what'”therapy” is about ?

It’s not about that at all.
The kind of psychotherapy that I know, and the one that works best for most, is cognitive behavioural therapy.
It means that your therapists detects patterns in your “cognitive behaviour,” in your way of thinking basically, and tries to correct the bad ones by giving you things to think about, asking the right questions etc.
It’s not a concious process while it’s happening, but when you’re done you’ll suddenly realize why your therapist asked this question or that.
