What is the difference between psychoanalysis and regular therapy with a psychologist? Specifically, how are sessions, end results, etc. different?

Its basically the same thing….i do think psychoanalysis would be more indepth….its like the first visit when the psychologist is trying to determine your mental disorder. Therapy is helping you cope with it. Therapy can include behavioral, cognitive, etc. But behavioral is the most common and effective.

Psychoanalysis takes about an hour or two. Therapy probably lasts for years, no?

Psychoanalysis is a type of therapy. There are various different kinds, and psychoanalysis is one of them that employs a lot of Freudian and Jungian concepts, i.e., dream analysis, symbolism for the person, archetypes, and other things that play a big part into the person’s psyche. A lot of introspective analysis is used to discover things about the person that they might not have known before. These session can last anywhere from 1 hour to 2 and a half.

Various other forms of treatment tend to be outcome-based, in that they are not so introspective and the client does not get to do as much “soul-searching.” Cognitive Behavioral therapy utilized ideas that helpt he client understand deviant or undesirable behavior, and the therapist gives them behavioral and thinking tools to help them get throught life. Other treatmernt methods use similar methods, and they are all different (for the most part) from one another.

psychoanalysis deconstructs personality to rebuilt it in correct way; the essential difference is that one heals not only in one thing or many, but the whole personality is refreshed. So you can say it takes more time but it is profounder.

A psychoanalyst compares therapy to evacuating people from an area that is going to be hit by an earthquake; it saves the people’s lives but it never prevents the earthquake from destroying their properties. So you can see the difference; therapy works on the surface while psychoanalysis works in the roots and the depths to heal you.

“Psychoanalysis is a method for the investigation of mental processes inaccessible by other means. At the same time, psychoanalysis is also a therapeutic method for neurotic disorders.” It’s a way of tapping into the subconscious so people can deal with the root problem. “As therapeutic technique, psychoanalysis is different from psychiatry and psychotherapy in general, as it stipulates the existence of a psychic unconscious and insists on analysis and the integration of the contents of unconscious as therapeutic procedure.” Cognitive-behavioral therapy “is a form of psychotherapy that emphasizes the important role of thinking in how we feel and what we do.” “There are several approaches to cognitive-behavioral therapy, including Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Rational Behavior Therapy, Rational Living Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, and Dialectic Behavior Therapy.” “The basic method of psychoanalysis is interpretation of the analysand’s unconscious conflicts that are interfering with current-day functioning — conflicts that are causing painful symptoms such as phobias, anxiety, depression, and compulsions.” Cost and length of treatment varies as you can see on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoanalysis#Cost_and_length_of_treatment.

In a nutshell the approaches to finding out what’s going on inside a person’s mind and innermost being are different.

Psychoanalysis is a therapy type. It can take years and years to accomplish goals.
Psychoanalysis is more of a medical term and usually done by someone with an Md training who is a psychiatrist. The process involves a survey of your whole life to see what is missing or where you got stuck. The therapist is the guiding force in psychoanalysis and relies on projectives and symbolic meaning to interpret the status of the client.

A psychologist may utilize behavioral or cognitive therapy or a combination. The focus of the sessions / therapy is on the client. The client and therapist are interactive. Any results will be obvious faster with these therapies because the client is involved and taught self evaluation techniques along the way. A client may begin to see progress in 21 days after the first session. Therapy may be of short term with return as needed or it may be long term if a court has appointed the therapy for the client.
