What is a good mental illness to do a project on?
I am taking Abnormal Psychology this semester, and I am required to do a project on a mental illness. However, this project cannot be on a largely discussed illness (e.g., anorexia nervosa, schizophrenia, anxiety, etc.). Does anyone have a good suggestion that has current research available on it?

I’d like to understand Social Anxiety and therapies (preferably holistic) to counter it.

Autism Spectrum Disorder/autistic savantism. Read about Kim Peek, the guy that the character Rain Man was based on. Savants often have incredible skills because of their disorder, like being able to redraw a photograph in perfect detail from memory.

Asperger’s Syndrome. If that’s on the “don’t do” list, then do Gender Identity Disorder. Surely that hasn’t been done all that much.

you should do it on Bipolar. That would be a good one since its weird how quick people emotions work.

A relatively new syndrome is slowly overtaking the news, where as 30 years ago it was unheard of. ‘going postal’ is a phrase that we are all familiar with now. it would be interesting to see what you can dig up about it, what the ‘cures’ are prevention, etc.

Autism has a lot of unanswered questions and lots of research being done on it right now. It would be interesting. Schizophrenia is interesting because of the cause and controversy surrounding it. What makes a person hear voices? But my son has autism and my research never stops. Always something new developing about it in the world of science and genetics research. Treatment varies greatly, and some turn out savants yet some are mentally retarded. How interesting. Very hard to live with, but if I were you, being on the outside, doing research would be endless and fun. Tons of creative possibilities there. And as far as PTSD goes, interesting, but not as much. Did you know that they used to think Autism was PTSD because of the self stimming, and non realistic anxieties?

How about agoraphobia -the fear of leaving the house (or being in the outdoors). I can help you with this one personally.
Or, multiple personality disorder. There are a couple very good books on this one. “When Rabbits Cry” and “Sybil”. I have forgotten the author’s names, but they will be easy to find.

I’d say Antisocial Personality Disorder, its not really focused on in Abnormal Psychology class. It requires a bit of research, but is not too hard. I researched it in general psychology. FYI: there’s some serial killers who have it if you want to include that. Check out: Female Serial Killers: How and Why Women Become Monsters by Peter Vronsky. Oh and it was said that the guy from the real Amityville House was one.

Multiple Personality Disorder.
people joke about it, but it’s a very traumatic and scary illness. it could even kill you if one side of your mind turns on another.
i read this book called Silent Partners by John Kellerman, and i’ve been interested in Psychology ever since. it’s a great read if your studying Psychology, and this subject is REALLY interesting, so seriously consider it. :D
have fun, good luck with your project. (:

Asperger’s Syndrome and narcissistic personality disorder, sometimes they cross over into each other.
