The methods and treatments that have been used in the past but may no longer be used. You can learn from past mistake or theories that have not yet been disproven
(1) We can learn how often our models of human behavior are insufficient, or just plain wrong because of invalid assumptions.
(2) We can learn how often a scientifically valid idea is rejected or resisted, not because it’s difficult to support, but because it challenges the status quo.
(3) We can learn the refinement of knowledge, from general principles to more specific knowledge, often through the trials and tribulations of the first two points.
(4) We can learn that many of our human-based assumptions, when applied to other species, seem either overly general, or overly specific.
(5) We can learn that even psychologists have the shortcomings of other people: ego, jealousy, prejudice, etc.
(6) We can learn that even psychologists have the advantages of other people: brilliant insight, perseverance, and courage.
(7) We can learn that the history of any one field of science is cross-linked with many other fields. For instance, imagine neuropsychology without the microscope or organic chemistry.
(8) We can learn that the leading cause of neuroses in rodents is NSF research grants. :-)

You can learn how different eras thought in different ways, and recognize the various influences in current psychological thoughts from the past.
And if your a scholar, you might want to research your ideas to make sure your not going bonkers with old ideas… :)
