Using Psychology in Business: A Practical Guide for Managers
Product Description
It’s a fact that finding, keeping and developing the right people has a greater impact on profitability than research and development, quality initiatives and even new technology. Psychological techniques can make the difference in people management – this book strips away the mystery, revealing how managers can build them easily into their daily routine. Mark Parkinson looks at an organization’s most valuable resource, its people, and the approaches that can be used to maximize their performance. The topics he covers trace a path through the rapidly growing field of business psychology from recruitment, selection and psychometrics to team building, individual development and workplace counselling. Each chapter reviews the major techniques and provides a rich source of practical ideas, reinforced with checklists, case studies and extracts from world-class assessment and development products. There is advice on how to obtain the services of a business psychologist, and contact information covering the major test publishers and consultancies. A detailed glossary ends the book, providing a powerful resource for all managers. Using Psychology in Business gives straightforward, non-theoretical advice and sets you up with an integrated set of solutions for all your people management and organizational development needs.

The book is laid out clearly and has some useful concepts. It covers everything from creating job descriptions, hiring the correct individuals and promoting growth and development within organizations.
I bought the book because I was interested in the chapters on individual motivators and team building but there wasn’t really enough substance or examples to be useful to me. It could be a good introductory text if you are unfamiliar with current HR methods.
