The importance of understanding culture, February 18, 2009

This book, written in clear and concise manner, is truly a must have for psychologists and students from all psychology sub-fields. The breadth and depth of issues covered within cross-cultural psychology framework are superb. What is striking about the book is that, upon reading it, one realises how pervasive and potent culture is – from the way we see ourselves (individual level) to nation level differences. Moreover, the book sheds light on the inter-relatedness of each level (ecological, socialisation processes, and psychological outcomes). In this increasingly globalised world where people across nations and cultures are increasingly coming into contact with one another, understanding and respecting people from other cultures isn’t so much an ideal notion worth striving for but a critical part to human survival.
