Kety, MD, Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience in Psychiatry, and Steven Matthysse, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychobiology, both of Harvard Medical School, said “an impartial reading of the recent literature does not provide the hoped-for clarification of the catecholamine hypotheses, nor does compelling evidence emerge for other biological differences that may characterize the brains of patients with mental disease” In 1992 a panel of experts assembled by the US Congress Office of Technology Assessment concluded “Many questions remain about the biology of mental disorders. In fact, research has yet to identify specific biological causes for any of these disorders. … Mental disorders are classified on the basis of symptoms because there are as yet no biological markers or laboratory tests for them.” Columbia University psychiatry professor Jack M. Gorman, MD, said “We really do not know what causes any psychiatric illness.” Another Columbia University psychiatry professor, Jerrold S. Maxmen, MD, said “It is generally unrecognized that psychiatrists are the only medical specialists who treat disorders that, by definition, have no definitively known causes or cures. … A diagnosis should indicate the cause of a mental disorder, but as discussed later, since the etiologies of most mental disorders are unknown, current diagnostic systems can’t reflect them …

SOCIETY CAUSES MENTAL ILLNESS. Medication cannot cure mental illness because mental illness is (innocently) caused by society, the government and the environment, affecting different individuals differently especially a certain gender of the individual will recieve the greatest impact and affect of mental illness (innocently,but depending) caused by society that will differ from the opposite sex as we so often see when males interact with females on the same planet.

@nspsych1741 Has Fred Baughman been given a psychiatric diagnosis he doesn’t like? I think you’re over stating your case by assuming that all critics of psychiatry have a chip on their shoulders. I don’t doubt that there are serious mental disorders, but I can’t help but be skeptical of the way medications are prescribed for every emotional problem a person faces.

Mental illness is real. People simply deny it because they don’t understand and It’s hard to understand if you aren’t mentally ill.
Psychiatrists aren’t out to get you. Many really want to help and medication is what they can offer, since it does help some people to lead normal lives.
There is no cure for mental illness. However, there’s also no cure for cancer, and treatment for cancer is justified. What’s the difference?

@abbygrace00 The problem with medications is they actually are not treating anything, they are changing the chemistry and wishing for good effects. The only way to solve mental illness is to objectively trace it back to etiology, talk therapy is subjective. 1/3 of depressed patients have low folic acid, Homocysteine is associated with depression, inflammation is linked to depression, gluten sensitivity is linked to many psychiatric disorders. @abbygrace00 Sort of, the medications can be helpful but they can also be harmful, that is the problem. However, there are many different theories for causes, all of which are multifactoral and involve the entire human biology, which modern psychiatry ignores. Even talk therapy and all psychiatric treatments can have some benefits, but as Dr. Mark Hyman says, “you cant talk your way out of mercury poisoning”.

I do think that many people are over diagnosed with this brain disease approach to mental illness, and prescribed medications they do not need. But I’m skeptical of those who say there is no basis for ever treating patients with medications. It’s hard for me to believe that something like schizophrenia is no more than a socail construct.
