If you don’t mind living on the west side of the country, I would recommend Arizona State University. It has one of the largest teacher preparation programs in the US, and was originally founded in the late 1800′s as a teachers college. The Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at ASU is one of the most innovative schools in America. They’re always trying new things, and really work to make the best prepared teachers before they graduate!
I have been working for the college for 2 years while working on my bachelor’s degree for secondary education, and couldn’t be happier with the school. You have the option of getting certified for special education K-12 and elementary education 1-8 at the same time; you’ll still graduate in 4 years, but you’ll have 2 teaching certificates instead of just one (don’t worry-it’s not any more work than just getting one certificate). There is also a graduate program specifically for special education of students with autism.
Here’s the website if you want to know more information:
http://education.asu.edu/
Or you can call an undergraduate advisor with specific questions:
Lacey Prokop: (480) 965-5555
Liz Langowski: (602) 496-2046
Jackie Chamberlain: (602) 543-6354
Best of luck in choosing the college that’s right for you!

If you’re interested in teaching children with autism you should look into becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
“Over the past 60 years, applied behavior analysis has become recognized as the treatment of choice for behavior problems associated with mental retardation, autism spectrum disorders, brain injury, and other disorders. ” (abainternational.org)
If you study behavior analysis you will be paid well for your skills and you’ll make a huge difference in the lives of the children you work with
If you’re on the east coast you can check these places out:
New England Center for Autism
Alpine Learning Group
If that interests you then you can look into psychology or special education programs at different colleges and study with a professor who is a BCBA. For a list of universities that have behavior analysis programs go here: http://www.abainternational.org/BA/education/Education.asp
Good luck!
