Q&A: What is the main propose of parapsychology?

Question by RAYs: What is the main propose of parapsychology?
I’m new in this stuff. I’m not sure about the people who study about it.
Do they want to find out paranormal it’s real? OR
Do they want to find the scientist evident to support that all that happen is because of the things that we still don’t understand about human brain or mind?

Like there is the evident show that out of body experiences (OBEs) it happen because something went wrong with brain.

Parapsychology in a nutshell is the scientific approach to studying paranormal abilities. As far as I know, so far, they haven’t gotten as far as establishing that paranormal abilities even exist. Until you can show that this stuff really exists, they can’t even form a hypothesis as to how it works. Sure they can contemplate it, but they will only get rubbish until they can show something actually exists.

Parapsychology is the scientific study of ESP and the nature of human consciousness. This includes creating laboratory experiments to study telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and psychokinesis. Also, this involves the scientific examination of reports that involve the projection of consciousness outside of the physical body and the evidence of the survival of consciousness after the physical body has stopped functioning.

Convincing scientific evidence of each of these phenomenon have been discovered and have been accepted by many scientists in many fields including physicists, chemists, biologists, and even psychologists. The scientists who study parapsychology have move past the stage of providing evidence of existence, and are now focused on the mechanisms behind these phenomena. For example, can psi be explained through evolution? Do meditative states help to enhance psi abilities?

There are many things about human consciousness and the operations of the brain that are not understood. Parapsychology is studying some of the phenomena that seem to be unusual based on the widely accepted view of science that all things are physically based and that the human mind is largely a closed system. Parapsychologists do not assume that psi is magical or spiritual in nature. They study the events and try to find ways to explain them based on the available evidence. This is good science by any definition, and if you examine the evidence from a scientific perspective, you will see that things happen every day that cannot be explained by our standard scientific theories. This is why parapsychology continues to exist and why it has survived for over 80 years as a legitimate source of scientific research in the US.

To give people with too much time on their hands and an over active imagination something to do.

It’s simple, Ray, those in the field of parapsychology study those phenomena which cannot be explained by ordinary means. The reall good ones are not invested in a particular outcome. They examine something that happened- crop circles for example- gather evidence, and try to explain the circle using the known- it’s a whilrlwind or a hoax. If there is no mundane explanation, they start to get more speculative- it’s a symbol for aliens, etc.

Ghost hunters, of course, are out to prove ghosts are real. They go into the research hoping for a particular outcome. Many who study the paranormal have a particular agenda, even if it is to show it’s all a bunch of crap. As I said, the really good ones have no agenda, but they are scarce.

I am convinced that parapsychology attempts to give evidence to wishful thinking, not necessarily consciously. It can be questioned as to how scientific parapsychology really is. This is quite complicated! Some parapsychologists may use the scientific method properly and they will surely not find what they are looking for i.e evidence of psychic abilities and life after death and life before life. Other parapsychologists may say (believe even) that they use the scientific method whilst they’re not and they can claim that they have found evidence for psychic abilities etc, though this evidence can not be called scientific. Parapsychologists are walking a very fine line between science and mumbojumbo and it is very hard to tell when they cross the line in either way. That’s how i see it.

    Here’s some relevant criticism:
