I could comment all night! lol! Mentioning that kids will be alright no matter what! I have a long haul truck driver, Navy Black Shoe, Furniture builder, 2 in college and one getting ready for culinary school. Also.. I am sure one argument heard is how do we socialize them.. We don’t. We socialize dogs. We educated our children…

Speaking to the Drs. Discussion on shame and wrong. It was very hard to get away from that, even in unschooling. The hardest thing was to sit and keep my mouth shut! This was a great vid! I was smiling and loving it!!!!!

As I mentioned int he dumb school vid I homeschooled 7 children. The problem in the homeschooling realm is the state laws. I Unschool style homeschooled. my kids. have homeschooled in ID, MN and WI. Minnesota is very difficult because the kids need to take standardized tests every year as well as the parents turning in strict lesson plans. I am a HUGE fan of the unschool plan..but it is hard to grasp sometimes…. If you are interested in talking to someone that has done it, let me know.

Fortunately there is no shortage of information, books, programs, etc available to home educators. If the parent does not feel comfortable teaching a subject then a search online or at curriculum fairs can fill in the gap.

John Holts’ books are pure gold. Any parent interested in education should read everything by Holt.

Right on, I believe most of the people in SP ED or no stupid but, in many ways R smarter and more stronger willed in some cases. Thomas Edison didn’t make it pass grade School because his teacher said he was too stupid to learn anything. I think one of the biggest problems with public ed is the ridged way they teach everything; and I find that there is nothing usually wrong with those that find themselves in SP ED it’s just they don’t lean well in the standard way school is taught these days.

He is talking more against the Essentialist Model. This occurred mainly after the scares of Sputnik and it still occurs somewhat today when we are constantly comparing ourselves to other countries. We try to put each child into a certain box because it makes evaluation easier. But we are really doing injustice to children. That is why there is this whole move for differentiated instruction, which is still very difficult for teachers because of ratios and other demands. Each child is different.

I liked the video but he really didn’t answer your first question. He didn’t compare the two or give pros and cons, he only presented the homeschool side for the most part.

Home schoolers are not locked in the closet. They get out and about more than public school children. They are not locked up in a classroom eight ours out of their day.

I was homeschooled with a flexible curriculum that allowed time for independent study while integrating the foundational math, language arts, science, and historical skills and information. School was never a chore for me, because I was allowed to explore, I learned to love learning. I thrived in this environment, I feel that I would have done poorly in public school.

okay! I was very social, because my mom would take me to gatherings with other kids. The only thing I would want to point out is for the parents to be just as dedicated if not more to their child’s education as a teacher would be to their students. My mom was not able to teach me a lot of things that she didn’t understand, such as math. I think its best for parents to understand they are going to be taking on a teaching roll and they should be educated themselves, just like a teacher would :)

His jeans are short. Home school might be better, not as dumb, but children should develop communications skills. If home schooled – then should attend some sport classes, have many friends, etc

If one applies themselves they could absorb all the information they would like under homeschool or public school. If that information is learned then not utilized for a long period we generally tend to forget it. Social skills can take you as far as you want. You can learn or re-learn at any point in life. If you don’t develop social skills then you won’t generally have your foot in the door in interviews and life in general. Never underestimate the power of observation and interaction

I went through a very poor public school district. Having said, I feel under a homeschool system I could have learned more or possibly had better focus. The one question I have with homeschooling is how well would social skills be developed? I know a number of adults who were homeschooled and many (not all), but many seem socially awkward. I feel good social skills can take you as far as education.

You’re right. If you live in Jamaica you would understand. We beat them for any sickness..If you have autism they beat it out of you and you are cured. If you cant walk they beat you and you walk. In America they put you in a wheelchair and do everything for you. This is why very few Jamaicans have any illness of the mind.
