Mental Illness: How To Function Well
Learn to accept your mental illness. In order to manage a mental illness, you must first accept that it exists. A lot of times people go through an episode and think that after it is over their condition is “cured”. This is usually not true. If you have been officially diagnosed with a mental illness, there are a few things you can do to function well in spite of the disorder.
Reduce stress: Mental, physical and emotional stress is one of the leading causes of many diseases including mental illness.
Excercise your body. Take a walk, dance, or do a few minutes of yoga each day. The important thing is that you move your body every day. Excercise has been shown to reduce stress, helps a person to rest better at night and gives you more energy during your day.
Keep a journal. Write about whatever bothers you or whatever you’re happy about. Wriing is excellent therapy and when you put your thoughts on the page, they can just be there instead of constantly swimming around in your head.
Drink green tea and eat a well-balanced diet filled with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats like omega-3 and lean protein is important for mental health and wellness in general. Green tea has been found in medical studies to improve your mood.
Learn to control your thoughts: Read and study: “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind”, by Joseph Murphy.
Dwell on positive thoughts and feelings.. Use your imagination and picture yourself living a healthy and productive life. Be patient and practice.
Take time to rest. Rest is very important to mental health and emotional balance.
***Always take your medications as prescribed. Many times people with mental illness decide to stop taking their medication because they are feeling better. That is exactly why you should continue to take your medication as directed.***
