Industrial Psychology and Human Resources?

Hi all :)

I’m a student trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. I’m thinking of Industrial Psychology. I’m now majoring in Psychology and the Industrial aspect of it seems cool. I was also thinking of double majoring in Business (Human Resources). Except I need some help differentiating the two. What’s the difference between Human Resources and Industrial Psychology? Also, would the two correspond well or should I study another topic in Business?

Thank you for the help!

not the total answer you are looking for, but if Industrial psych looks interesting, you owe it to yourself to take one course in Human Factors Psychology or Human Factors Engineering. It is fascinating.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a scarcity of people with this training makes getting a good job in the field relatively easy. I suggest talking personally with people at schools, about the field and employment prospects. You should be able to find somebody at a university who counsels people who are thinking of studying there. It make take a lot of time on the phone, but keep hunting until you find that person and set up an appointment. Do that at one university or more.

It may be that different schools have different concepts of things like Human Resources versus Industrial Psychology, although if there is a professional association for accrediting people in this field you would expect uniformity of course titles from one school to the next.

Don’t buy into a university because of the prestige of the university. What matters is the department you’re studying in. I’ve heard that Harvard is greatly overrated except for Business and Law.
