If I get a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine can I still become a psychiatrist?

Question by Was W: If I get a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine can I still become a psychiatrist?
And specialize in forensic psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine too?
I was thinking of attending the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine far off into the future because of its 3 year accelerated med school program and I was just wondering.
Thank you for all your answers.

Yes. Of course! Specializing in one field doesn’t mean that you can’t specialize in another; actually, it may strengthen your overall skills as a doctor.
You never know, but some schools may even offer joint osteopathic/psychiatry degrees. Doubtful, but like I said, getting two PhDs in medicine can only strengthen your ability to be a good physician. I even know some doctors with law degrees; they are crazy but make tons of money! :)

Hope this helps!

    Yes you can.
DO grads are eligible for “MD” Psychiatry residencies (though not the other way round). If you want to rise high in the Osteopathy medical associations, you need to do your Psychiatry Residency in a DO program.

Be aware that some DO schools are slipping back into teaching superstitious practices such as “cranial therapy”. Most DOs ignore this once they graduate.
