How many years of school do you need until you can be a mental health psychologist?

Question by Anna M: How many years of school do you need until you can be a mental health psychologist?
I’m seriously considering being a mental health psychology for numerous reasons, and was wondering how long it would take me if I do decide to take that road. thanks so much!

    after high school
    2-four years for counseling
    4 years bachelor degree counseling
    6 years masters degree , social work, psychology
    8 years plus disertation for Phd psychologist

    To become a psychologist in the US currently you need a PH. D in psychology. That means that including undergraduate work which is 4 years you will need another 3 to 5 years graduate work. There are some programs where you don’t have to get a seprerate Master’s degree before you get your PH. D, thus cutting down about a year in school. Once you have your PH.D you than have to do a residency for 1 to 2 years in a clinical setting before you’re allowed to practise on your own.

    To become a psychologist…you need your PhD….which takes a long time…like 12 years.
