Essentials of Sociology (Second Edition)

Regarded as the most authoritative introduction to contemporary sociology, Essentials of Sociology adds a new author to its team with the Second Edition. Deborah Carr draws on her extensive experience teaching introductory sociology at Rutgers University to revise the book and add new material that underscores the relevance of sociology to students’ lives. New chapter openers include a discussion of Hurricane Katrina in the urbanization chapter, a description of group behaviors of West Point cadets in the chapter on organizations, and, in the stratification chapter, a discussion of the pecking order among high school students.

Although I’m only at chapter two, I’m impressed that the author wrote the book with the AVERAGE readers in mind. A very user-friendly book, full of refreshingly mind-opening information. Good job!

This book outlines all the concepts easily, and doesn’t add any fluff so you get all the information in as little words possible.

I loved this book!! I used it for my intro to soc class my first quarter of school. Henslin does a great job of explaining theories and terms in a way that the reader can understand. He also has a great way of keeping the reader interested in what is being said through different examples, charts, and pictures! This is a great book!!

The author of Esstentials of Sociology has first-hand experience around the world observing different groups of people in different countries. This enables him to provide the reader with examples to demonstrate principles and topics of sociology that makes them easy to understand. Very well-writen; an easy-read. Contains great pictures, charts, graphs, statistics, etc.

This book was required for an intro to sociology class that I took and although this book is ‘introductory’, I felt that it could have provided more examples, sources, and evidence to the concepts it was attempting to convey. Another issue I had with the book was that the graphs that it included were ofter hard to decipher and were included with little or no explanation. Bottom line: Although the book does offer some interesting and useful information, it lacks helpful examples and explanations, so if possible choose a different intro to sociology textbook.

The textbook I received was exactly as I had ordered it. The best part about this business transaction was the delivery. I received my textbook two business days later, which was great!
