2. Foundations: This Is Your Brain

Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 110) This lecture introduces students to two broad theories of how the mind relates to the body. Dualism is the ubiquitous and intuitive feeling that our conscious mind is separate from our physical bodies, whereas Materialism is the idea that all of our mental states are caused by physical states of the brain. This lecture reviews arguments explaining why materialism has become the predominant theory of mind in psychology. This discussion is followed by a basic overview of the neurophysiology of the brain. 00:00 – Chapter 1. The Brain, the Mind and Dualism 12:06 – Chapter 2. Scientific Consensus Against Dualism 19:28 – Chapter 3. The Neuron: The Basic Building Blocks of Thought 32:58 – Chapter 4. The Different Parts of the Brain 44:47 – Chapter 5. some people have “depression”

i have met alot of them. people who use depression as an excuse to have a whiny pathetic lifestyle.

on the other hand, i also had a sister, who almost died from her depression. she was born with it, exhibiting signs at a young age. through treatment, she is now an active and modest member of society. he brain was reprogrammed and now produces the proper amounts of serotonin.

to say a disease outright doesn’t exist is completely ignorant and almost as selfish.

Agreed. Appreciating what you have is a easy way to avoid depression, selflessness, etc.

I’ve met people with depression, and they are the most self centered people a guy can ever be around. They are to focused on there own life to care about anyone else. The sad thing is, is that some of them have the most loving parents and household.

I had an Abusive father, moved across the state, come from a poor family and never once felt depressed. Why? Because I am not entrenched in selfishness unlike all these teenagers with “depression”.

Take them to a 3rd world, war torn country and see what real problems are. If they are not seeking help, they don’t want help.

    Grow some character.

People should have to take IQ tests before being allowed to post on YouTube, but then again I would miss the light entertainment (pun intended). Please return to your studies at once Mr. Low Rent Entertainment…at once!!!!!

Of course you disagree.. And, there are medical “experts” and scientific professionals in the developed world who agree and say what I say. Traumatic experiences are one thing. But about 80-90 percent of these jerkoffs just want attention… Truth be told, they should just kill themselves…

Sorry, life is simple, people make it hard. Mental health isn’t complex. Depression is an excuse to make people feel sorry for them. The slaves, immigrants to Ellis Island during the 20′-40’s, and The Great Depression are prime examples of people who may have been through traumatic experiences. Yet, they sucked it up.. Current generations are just weak..

Over-simplistic. Mental health is complex. There is an element of “grow up” and “pull yourself together” that is necessary at times. But sometimes, such bad experiences in peoples lives (perhaps over a long peroid of time) actually prevent the brain from functioning correctly/normally. This is what depression is.

It’s one thing to grieve and sorrow, it’s another to make it a lifestyle…
