I would get into a good university and take a range of courses related to psych and social work. These will open up a hands on knowledge to what is involved and will let you get a feel if it is right for you. Also many agencies, youth centers etc are always looking for volunteers to help with programs. This will look amazing on your university application and will help you build your resume before you even graduate. This is the type of work I do and though it can be stressful and at times very tiring it is incredibly rewarding. Good luck with your future goals!

Well it is hard to tell if you are interested in psychology, or sociology. There are many areas where you could study children and get jobs working with children from child advocate to youth worker to gang interventions. Child development would be along the lines of what a child should be able to do at certain ages. For example a child as young as 6-years-old would know enough to run in front of a moving car if they wanted to commit suicide. A child 6-years-old does not understand repeats on the tv. When they see something on tv, they think that is happening right that moment. So when the planes flew into the twin towers and the news channels kept repeating the coverage, children that young did not understand they were watching a repeat, they thought the attack kept happening every time they watched it. You could also study the effects of rape and molestation on children at different ages. When children don’t deal with a trauma and horror in their life, it comes out in different areas, such as weight gain and health and behavioral issues. You can often tell the age a child was molested because photos of them were normal weight until they were molested and then they tend to balloon up in size. I worked with a man who’s daughter was molested by a man who threatened to blow up her family if she told on him, and when he found out what happened to his daughter, she was so traumatized, their father daughter relationship was never the same, even though he wasn’t the one who hurt her. You might try your area library and look for books on child development and see if they are something you might like to read about. Chase your dreams.
