Casebook in Abnormal Psychology

Product Description
Using cases from the authors’ files or from case files of other working clinicians, CASEBOOK IN ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY portrays the rich and arresting nature of disorders manifested in real people. Cases illustrate every major DSM-IV category, followed by a therapy outcome section that tells the “rest of the story” of what happened to these clients. Using an integrative approach, the authors emphasize the multiple causes of disorders and incorporate developmental and cultural issues in each case. Complex cases are presented without a diagnosis, so students can come up with a diagnosis on their own. This Fourth Edition includes a new case on body dysmorphic disorder as well as two new cases without a diagnosis.

The case studies selected for use in this book are very interesting and serve as excellent examples for various mental health diagnoses. Up-to-date, cutting edge treatment modalities for each specific disorder are also discussed in the chapters. It is an excellent resource.

This book is very readable, and gives case examples of several different mental disorders with a discussion at the end of each case. It enables the reader to understand aspects of a disorder that he or she might not glean from reading only textbooks. It is an excellent companion to textbooks on abnormal psych or psychopathology. My biggest complaint is the pricetag for such a small book.

I am a Psychology major at a private four year college and I think this book is great. This book brings real cases for the main psychological disoders such as: GAD, PDA, OCD and schizophrenia (just to name a few). David H. Barlow is a world renowned psychologist and professor of psychology and psychiatry and director of the center for anxiety disorders at Boston University. For each case, the authors include: clinical history, DSM-Iv-TR diagnosis, case formulation using the integrative model, treatment goals and planning, and course of treatment and treatment planning. This book is essential for recognazing symptoms for each disorder and for aquiring skills such as diagnosis. I feel this book is important to undetrtanding the implications of psychological disorders, since it brings each disorder to life.
