Physiological Aspects

Question by Angela H.: Can someone help me as to what exactly this is asking?
I’m not looking for the answers to the question, just what it’s even asking…this is an AP Psychology frq.

The human organism displays various reactions that are characterized by opposing tendencies. Use a specific physiological or psychological mechanism to explain how both aspects of opposing processes apply to EACH of the following.
-Autonomic nervous system
-Color vision
-Drug use
-Nerve firing

The thing that dons the most confusion is “opposing tendencies”.

The wording of this is a bit tricky! It looks like the first sentence is merely trying to state that humans are often influenced differently by their physical being, and their psychological being; when it comes to processes such as appetite, etc.

For instance (I’m not a psych student, but from what I can gather…), humans need to eat when they are physically hungry. Their stomachs are growling, in need of nutrients, etc. However, humans may ALSO choose to eat for other, psychological, reasons. For instance, out of sadness, boredom, etc.

I might not be spot on, but maybe it’ll help you understand the question a bit better, hearing a different perspective. Good luck!
