Breast surgery ‘has psychological, as well as physical effect’

Women looking to get breast surgery should consider the fact that the treatment has a psychological impact upon them as well as a physical one, it has been stated.Consumer advice magazine BuyAssociation has urged women to understand the reasons they have for wanting this type of surgery in order to better prepare them for life after the operation.Paul Collins, editor of Looking Good for BuyAssociation, said: “People obviously have to consider all of the options, all of the implications before they undergo any kind of surgery like this. Particularly invasive surgery like breast surgery, which can have certain complications.”He added that it is imperative that women are choosing to do this for the “right reasons”.Figures compiled by SurgiCare have revealed there has been a 75 per cent increase in the number of women choosing to have this form of surgery since January, with 60 per cent of these cases being for women wishing to increase their bust before their wedding day.Mark Bury, chief executive officer of SurgiCare, stated that a proportion of these requests are being turned down by surgeons, as some women are requesting unrealistic deadlines and unsafe enlargements, a development which could lead to health insurance implications in the long run due to associated complaints such as back pain and the need to renew implants.Furthermore, there is a growing trend for men to undergo treatments such as botox prior to their big day as they wish to look their best in wedding photos.According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, there were more than 34,000 cosmetic surgeries carried out in the UK last year.Of this figure, women accounted for the majority of surgeries, with men accounting for just nine per cent of the total sum.Furthermore, the organisation noted breast augmentation was the most popular surgery undertaken in the UK in 2008, with 8,439 performed – up 30 per cent from 2007.
